COURTLAND — November 2, 2026. The Courtland library’s official history begins in 1909 in a resident’s living room, and includes a community campaign that revived the branch after county budget cuts shut it in 1992.

A library that moved with the town

The collection started as a contract branch in Mrs. F. Paulson’s home and later moved to the post office. Residents used a mail-order borrowing system and sometimes delivered materials to people unable to leave home.

Volunteers take over

After the 1992 closure, local residents and Friends of the Sacramento Public Library reopened it as Courtland Volunteer Library in 1993. The branch officially rejoined the Sacramento system in 2003.

A name honoring community service

The library was renamed Nonie Wetzel Courtland Community Library in 2016 to recognize volunteer leadership. Residents can learn more by visiting the present branch at 170 Primasing Avenue.
