COURTLAND — November 2, 2026. Sacramento County’s land-use records identify Courtland’s Chinese American commercial heritage as a significant element in the community’s planning and preservation goals.
A shipping settlement on the river
County records date Courtland’s establishment as a fruit-shipping port to 1870, with extensive pear orchards and traffic along River Road. Chinese Americans worked in farming, transportation and levee construction.
A historic district needing attention
The county’s planning text specifically notes the North Courtland Chinese Commercial District and acknowledges that some resources have not been stabilized or rehabilitated. Recognition of heritage is not proof that funding for full restoration has been awarded.
Why readers should care
Historic commercial buildings and sites help explain who built the Delta economy. Visitors should respect private property and review local heritage documentation rather than enter a deteriorated building to explore.
